Nitrous Oxide Q&A

What is nitrous oxide?

Nitrous oxide is a colorless, odorless gas that combines with oxygen to create a reliable and safe sedation method during dental procedures. It’s a conscious sedation method, which means your child is awake but calm and comfortable during the procedure.

How does nitrous oxide sedation work?

The most common method of administering nitrous oxide sedation is a mask. Your child simply breathes normally through their nose while wearing the mask, which allows them to inhale the sedative. Dr. Grady adjusts the nitrous oxide dosage for your child’s body weight and unique needs.

Nitrous oxide takes effect almost instantly. Your child may become a little giggly or demonstrate euphoric behaviors, which is completely normal. That’s why nitrous oxide is sometimes called “laughing gas.”

Dr. Grady monitors your child carefully throughout the dental procedure. She watches your child’s skin color, respiratory rate, and respiratory rhythm, as well as performs periodic checks to make sure your child’s responsive to questions or directions.

After the procedure, Dr. Grady leaves the mask in place but turns off the nitrous oxide. That leaves your child breathing in pure oxygen for several minutes, which is the best way to clear any lingering nitrous oxide from their body.

The effects wear off almost immediately, and your child is ready to return home once their procedure is complete.

When does my child need nitrous oxide sedation?

Nitrous oxide sedation has many uses in pediatric dentistry, and it may be especially well suited for the following groups.

  • Children who are anxious or fearful about dental care
  • Children with special needs
  • Children with severe gag reflexes
  • Children who need lengthy dental procedures
  • Children who can’t have profound (prilocaine, lidocaine, tetracaine) anesthesia

Dr. Grady assesses each child’s needs individually before recommending nitrous oxide or another form of sedation.

How do I prepare my child for nitrous oxide sedation?

A member of the friendly Open Sesame Dentistry team gives you all the preparation details ahead of your child’s appointment. In general, that usually includes giving your child only light foods and liquids before their scheduled procedure.

Make sure to dress your child in comfortable clothing that they can move freely in. You might want to bring along a favorite comfort object, like a soft toy or blanket, for your child to hold during their treatment.

If your child needs nitrous oxide sedation, you can trust Open Sesame Dentistry for a calm and comfortable experience. Book your child’s appointment by phone or through online scheduling.
